Observation
Two pages on the same estate state different customer counts. Both were live when the estate was read.
over 500,000 customers
over 800,000 customers
In a report each version is shown with its page address. They are withheld here to keep the estate anonymous.
Reason
Both statements can be true at once, because 800,000 is over 500,000. But a reader, or a retrieval system, asking how many customers the company has gets two different scales for one fact, and nothing on either page says which is current. One of them is probably out of date. That is an inference and it is labelled as one.
Evidence and grade
- Sage extracted both statements from their pages, each in its exact words.
- Cedar paired them by a fixed rule: the same statement, one figure that cannot be reconciled with the other, and subject similarity of at least 0.85.
- This is one of 153 contradictions across 4,471 claims in that estate, 24 of them high severity.
- Source: case file 01, published 5 Oct 2026. Grade A. n = 1.
What woods could not see
- Which figure is current. Only the reader can say.
- Pairs of statements with no wording in common. Cedar compared 20,000 candidate pairs, so the 153 contradictions are a floor, not a ceiling.
- Any page behind a sign-in. woods reads public pages only.
What to do with it
Text out: “over 500,000 customers” on page A or “over 800,000 customers” on page B, whichever is not current. Text in: yours to supply, because woods does not know which figure is current. Why: one figure, stated once, wherever the count appears.
