01 · The exposure

Green claims now carry direct penalties, in the EU and the UK.

Two facts, each with its source, its evidence grade and the date we read it. We state no other figure about greenwashing on this page, because we hold no other source we would grade.

What these rules mean for your business is a question for your lawyers. woods gives them the list to work from.

02 · Why it happens

Nobody set out to mislead. Nobody holds the list.

Exposure is rarely intent. It is volume: claims written by many people over years, on pages nobody has reread since.

  1. Many authors

Product, marketing, sustainability and support teams each write about energy and the environment, in their own words, on their own pages.

  2. Years of pages

A wording agreed in one review is updated on the page that prompted it. The FAQ, the press page and the old campaign keep the version before.

  3. No list

Without one list of the green claims and where each one sits, nobody can check them all, and nobody can say when each one last changed.

03 · One claim, followed through time

What the record looks like.

One energy claim on three pages of a website, read four times. Step through the reads to see what woods records at each one.

Illustrative example, not a customer’s data. The site, the pages, the wording and the dates are made up to show the method. No company is named or described.

Read 1 of 4 First read, 3 Feb 2026. woods finds the claim on three pages, worded three ways, and records each in its exact words, with its page and the heading it sits under. Next: read the site again.

04 · What woods does

It finds the claims, records them and shows where they disagree.

Each line below is a field in the Claims register, the screen in the app where the record lives.

  • Finds the claimsSage

Every environmental and energy claim on the pages it reads, such as “carbon neutral”, “100% renewable” or “energy efficient”.

  • The exact wordsSage

Each claim in its original wording and language, so anyone can check it against the live page.

  • The page, and where on itSage

Every page the claim appears on, and the section it sits in, so it can be found in seconds.

  • Its historyThe register

When the claim was first and last seen, how its wording differs from page to page, and when it was removed. Dated to the reads that saw it, never to a moment woods did not see.

  • Pages that disagreeCedar

Where one page’s version of a claim disagrees with another’s, side by side.

  • No substantiation found on the pageSage

A generic green claim with no figure or evidence on the same page is marked so. It is an observation about the page, not a legal judgement: the evidence may sit elsewhere.

05 · What you hold afterwards

A list legal can work from, with its dates.

Three things you did not have before the first read.

  1. The Claims register

The environmental and energy claims on the pages woods read, word for word, with the page and section each sits on. A screen in the app.

  2. Each claim’s history

First and last seen, every page it appears on, its wording on each, when it was removed, and whether it disagrees with another page. Nothing earlier is rewritten.

  3. A dated record for legal

The whole register downloads as a dated record of what your site said and when.

06 · How it works

Read-only, public pages, nothing stored but the record.

Narrow by design, so there is little for your IT and legal teams to approve.

  1. Read-only

woods never holds write access to anything. Every change is made by you, in your own tools.

  2. Public pages

It reads what any visitor can read, and respects robots.txt. No sign-in, no credentials, nothing to install.

  3. No content stored

woods keeps the claims, where they sit and the metadata around them. Not copies of your pages.

07 · The Assessment

Start the record with one read.

The Assessment is the first read of your public estate. It dates each claim it finds, and every later read adds to that claim’s history.

What you get
  • The Claims register: the claims on the pages it reads, word for word, with the page and section each sits on.
  • Generic green claims marked where no substantiation was found on the page.

  • A dated report, one chapter per agent, with the evidence beside every finding.
  • The pack: 13 documents, downloaded as one file, ready for legal.

08 · Questions

Questions about green claims and woods.

Factual answers about what woods does and about the two sources above. None of this is legal advice. For what applies to your business, ask a lawyer.

What is greenwashing?

In plain terms, an environmental claim that is vague, cannot be backed up, or leaves a misleading impression of a product’s or a company’s impact. Whether a particular claim crosses that line is a legal judgement, and woods does not make it.

What does Directive (EU) 2024/825 change?

According to the European Commission, it applies from 27 September 2026 and bans generic environmental claims made without recognised substantiation. We read that source on 6 Oct 2026 and grade it A, a primary source.

Is that the Green Claims Directive?

No. Directive (EU) 2024/825 is the directive on empowering consumers for the green transition, and it is the only EU instrument this page relies on. We make no statement here about any other proposal.

What can the CMA do about green claims in the UK?

According to a law firm’s briefing, the CMA began enforcing consumer law directly on 6 April 2025, with fines of up to 10% of global turnover, and its early focus includes green claims. We read it on 6 Oct 2026 and grade it C, a reputable secondary source.

Does woods tell us whether a claim is true?

No. Sage extracts each claim in its exact words and Cedar shows where pages disagree. Whether a claim is substantiated, and which wording stands, is your decision and your advisers’.

What does woods read, and what does it keep?

Public web pages only, read-only, respecting robots.txt. It keeps the claims in their exact words, where they sit, the dates it read them and the metadata around them. It does not keep copies of your pages.

Can woods show changes made before it first read our site?

No. A claim’s history starts at the first read that saw it, and a removal is dated to the window between two reads. woods does not guess at history it did not observe.

What does “no substantiation found on the page” mean?

woods marks a generic green claim when it finds no figure or evidence for it on the same page. It is an observation about that page, not a legal judgement: the evidence may exist elsewhere, and whether the claim is acceptable is for you and your lawyers.

Does it read every page?

Each sweep reads claims on a set budget of pages and names the pages it read. A page that was not read is listed as not read, never as clean, so the gap is on the record too.

Find it before someone else does.
